An NCP legislator has accused party colleague and PWD minister Chhagan Bhujbal of “betraying the trust of the Maratha community.”

Speaking in Nashik on Sunday, Vinayak Mete, NCP legislator and president of promaratha outfit Shiv Sangram, criticised Bhujbal, saying, “Bhujbal is neither clearly supporting the reservation for Marathas, nor he is opposing it.

During the 2009 elections, Bhujbal had assured the Maratha community that he would support the cause. However once the elections were over, Bhujbal was silent.”

The Maratha community has been seeking inclusion in the Other Backward Community (OBC) category.

The NCP and Congress enjoy support among the Marathas, who account for 30% of the state population.

Politically, it is a dominant community, with almost half of the 288 MLAs in the state belonging to it.

Taking note of this, the state government has constituted a high-powered committee under Congress leader and industry minister Narayan Rane to examine the issue of reservation for Marathas.

Previously the state backward class commission had studied the matter.
