Mohammad Ali Abubakr Sheikh, 48, BSP Leader and alleged marine diesel smuggler who is currently in jail for plotting murder of a businessman, was admitted to JJ Hospital after he complained of knee joint pain on Tuesday.
"He is undergoing treatment to control diabetes and hypertension. He also has knee joint pain which will be examined by the orthopaedicians," said Dr TP Lahane, dean, JJ Hospital.
The crime branch arrested Sheikh and six others on September 21 in connection with the murder of Sayed Madar, 54, alias Chandbhai on September 15. Ali is currently in judicial custody.
The killing was financed and planned by Sheikh who had unsuccessfully contested the last Parliamentary polls on a BSP ticket to gain control over the smuggling of scrap and marine diesel at the docks. Chandbhai was one of his chief rivals.
Sheikh had allegedly provided Rs3 lakh for the killing. The firearm, a factory-made .9 mm pistol, along with three live rounds was also seized at the time of his arrest. Known for his connections with the underworld, Ali had been detained under the National Security Act, booked for three murder cases and dacoities.
Proceedings under the Terrorist and Disruptive Activities Act had also been initiated against him in the past.
