Two people were killed and 11 injured when a suburban train rammed into the debris of an old bridge carrying a water pipeline that collapsed onto the railway tracks between
Mulund and Thane, 32 km from Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST).
The mishap occured at 10.50 am.
Among the dead was the motorman A Ramachandran, who was trapped in the train cabin. He could be extricated only at 2.20 pm, but by then it was too late.
Train services between Ghatkopar and Thane have been suspended and are unlikely to be restored for at least 30 hours.
The bridge had been the bone of contention between the Thane Municipal Corporation and the Railways for a while. The bridge passes under a highway that was being widened and the dispute was over who should rebuild it.
There had been at least seven attempts to rebuild the bridge earlier but they had all failed due to different reasons.
