At a review meeting with the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation's (MSRTC) at Mantralaya on Friday, home minister RR Patil asked that the project to install CCTV cameras at major state transport (ST) depots be expedited.

MSRTC had floated the plan to install CCTVs at depots in 2011, but it was put on hold because of paucity of funds. The cameras, according to the plan, were to be fitted at spots with huge influx of people, such as urinals, inquiry and ticket counters and indoor restaurants at ST depots.

Along with CCTVs, the MSRTC also tabled an outstanding bill of Rs36 crore pending with the home department; the bill was for transportation of convicts and policemen.

"There was an outstanding amount of Rs36 crore that we have asked the finance department to clear. We have asked the MSRTC to spend this on installing the much-needed CCTV network," said a senior home department official present at the meeting.

A woman official present also pointed out the need for cleaner and safer toilets for women at depots, which has been agreed to.
