In a bid to ensure better surveillance, the BrihanMumbai Electricity Supply and Transport (BEST) will equip all its buses with closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras by April 15.

Of the 4,200 buses, CCTV cameras have, so far, been installed in 3,500 buses. “Around 15 days ago, we completed the installation of the cameras in 3,500 buses. The work is in progress,” said OP Gupta, general manager, BEST.

The cameras can store the footage for around 72 hours, which could be retrieved by the police for investigation purposes.

“The CCTV cameras may deter offenders who try to take undue advantage of the crowd. It could also act as evidence in case of harassment of women or theft. The footage will be provided only when a complaint is registered,” said a BEST official, on condition of anonymity as he is not authorised to speak to the media.

Complaints of misbehaviour can also be lodged on the BEST helpline 1800 227 550.

“If the complaint is against the staff, the undertaking can take action based on the recordings. But, for any issue with a co-passenger, the complaint must be lodged with the local police station,” said the official.

In January, a woman passenger had complained against the rude behaviour of a conductor in a bus between Mulund and Andheri on route number 422. The undertaking had suspended the conductor for two days on finding him guilty.
