Chavan apologises for breach of privilege

Taking note of the breach of privilege motion moved by Opposition leader Eknath Khadse, chief minister Prithviraj Chavan expressed regret for announcing financial assistance to the kin of the people who died in the Vidarbha floods outside the House, despite the ongoing session.


Khadse moved the motion during the zero-hour in the state Assembly on Tuesday.

He said the announcement by the chief minister amounts to breach of privilege of the House.

He added that Chavan should have apprised the House about the steps taken by the government.

“Chavan announced the financial compensation of Rs2.5 lakh to the kin of those who died in the floods in the last two weeks,” he said.

“Had I not spoken about the financial help during my visit, there would have been criticism that the CM did not offer anything to the people.

Also the announcement of the financial help was as per the set norms of relief in case of calamities. According to the norms, the families are entitled to a compensation of Rs1.5 lakh, to which wet drought in the affected districts.

They have also demanded compensation of Rs25,000 per hectare for the farmers who have suffered loss of crop.

The demand for immediate discussion on the issue led to chaos and subsequent adjournments. we added Rs1 lakh from the chief minister’s contingency fund,” Chavan said.

Chavan said that he express regret for the mistake committed inadvertently.

Khadse withdrew the motion after Chavan’s statement.
