The gang of children who have been operating and stealing cash and valuables from weddings seem to be giving the police a hard time.

The police claim that not only have children been trained professionally, they have also been brainwashed by their trainers to not give out any information if caught. They maintain that they are beggars and reside close to the railway stations.

However, this means that investigations have come to a near standstill. So far five cases of theft have been observed across the city. Three are registered with the Santacruz police, one with Juhu police and another one with the Worli police.

The police arrested three girls aged between nine and 11 years in three separate cases from Ramada Hotel, Juhu, and Aajivasan Hall, Santacruz. The girls have been sent to Dongri Children’s Home. The police have learnt that the gang hails from Madhya Pradesh and has come to the city for the wedding season.

“It appears that two children are accompanied by a woman above 60 years of age. She directs them on how to go about doing their jobs. When we arrested the three minors, two old women came to the police station enquiring about them," said Jamil Shaikh, assistant inspector, Santacruz police station. “They appear to be street kids, but when sent to weddings for carrying out thefts they are very well dressed.”  All the girls who have been arrested have a black thread tied to their arms. The police suspect this could either be a tag or some superstition that the gang believes in.
