A decision by Cidco to give 11 hectares of its land for free to set up a casting yard for the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link project has come as relief to the MMRDA, especially as the Mumbai Port Trust (MbPT) has demanded a whopping Rs. 611 crore for another plot of land that will be put to the same use.
The MMRDA requires two pieces of land to set up two casting yards — one near Sewri and another at Chirle for the project, which will offer faster connectivity to Navi Mumbai and the Goa and Pune highways by connecting Sewri to Nhava.
The yard at Sewri is to be built on 13 hectares of MbPT land, for which the trust wants the exorbitant sum. The second yard will be built on the land that Cidco has given the authority.
Following the development, the MMRDA has approached the ministry of shipping seeking a concession for the MbPT land.
A few days ago, Cidco (City and Industrial Development Corporation) had sent a letter to the state government seeking its permission to allot the land to the MMRDA free of cost.
MMRDA officials said Cidco’s move is a step towards ensuring that construction on the MTHL begins on time, at the end of this year.
“We are supposed to be in possession of land for the casting yards to start construction. However, the MbPT has demanded more than the actual market rates,” said a senior MMRDA official.
Meanwhile, MbPT has claimed that the rates it has fixed for its land are based on reasonable calculations. “While fixing rates for the land for casting yard, we have used the same criteria we would for other companies,” said a senior MbPT official, requesting anonymity.
“We have sent a proposal to the ministry of shipping for final approvals. If the ministry wants to give a concession to MMRDA, it will convey it to us.”
