On Friday morning, Mumbaiites pulled their blankets closer as they woke up to a day that bore some resemblance to an actual winter day. The minimum temperature was 17 degrees Celsius, almost 1.3 degrees below normal, whereas the past week had seen minimum temperatures in the range of 18 to 19 degrees Celsius.

Officials from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said that a change in the wind direction had lowered the temperature. “The western disturbance that carries cold winds across northern India has moved towards the north-east on Friday. This has caused a slight change in the wind direction and as a result, the temperature dropped,” said Ajay Kumar, meteorologist, IMD, western region. “The winds are not blowing in directly from the coldest regions of the country, so the temperature will be back to normal over the weekend.”

The minimum temperature in Santacruz was 17 degrees Celsius whereas the minimum temperature at Colaba was 21.7 degrees Celsius on Friday. The maximum temperature in Santacruz was 34.3 degrees Celsius while at Colaba, it was 34.2 degrees Celsius.

However, weathermen from the regional centre in Pune said that this year has seen fewer cold spells due to enhanced easterly winds. “The warm easterly wind that blows across the southern peninsula has extended across the western region, increasing the minimum temperature,” said Medha Kolhe, deputy director-general, weather forecasting, IMD, Pune.

The IMD has predicted that the minimum temperature on Saturday would be 18 degrees Celsius while the maximum temperature would be 33 degrees Celsius.
