“As my father is a chef, we make all the Christmas food at home. After preparing the treats, we will start preparations for the Christmas lunch on Sunday,” said Sahar D’Souza, 18. “We gift these treats to friends and families on Christmas,” she said. The family also celebrates festivals such as Diwali and Eid.

“As my father loves to cook, he prepares delicacies such as sheer korma and shankarpali for these festivals,” said D’Souza.

Some families prefer to stick to traditional food instead of the popular western Christmas meal.

“As we are Malayali Catholics, we follow a different tradition, and instead of stuffed turkey, which is a western concept, we prepare chicken dishes,” said Sarah Mathew, 21, a Goregaon resident.

“Instead of buying from outside, we enjoy food made by my grandmother and mother, so it makes the occasion more enjoyable,” she said

For a few families, however, ordering from outside is a more convenient option.

“I always order sweets and cakes from outside as I don’t find the time to prepare them,” said Gia Pereira, a public relations officer, who lives in Bandra. “Before I was married, I used to prepare Christmas treats at home with my mother. Now, I order Christmas cakes from Pune and pick sweets from a home-run business in Bandra,” she said.

"We have started getting orders since December 1 for meats and cupcakes. We have around 20 orders of stuffed turkey to be delivered on December 24 and 25,” said Nikhil Jhadhav, store manager, Freeman & Baker, Juhu
