For the first time since protests against the Delhi gang rape broke out in the city, the gender-sensitisation wing of the civic body on Saturday participated in a campaign demanding women’s safety, at Marine Drive.

The Brihanmumbai Muni-cipal Corporation’s Savitribai Phule Gender Resource Centre (SPGRC) participated in the solidarity march ‘Let’s make Mumbai safe for women and children everywhere, 24x7,’ organised by several non-profit organisations, led by the Observer Research Foundation (ORF) Mumbai. More than 200 protestors walked from Marine Drive to Nariman Point.

“We have been coordinating with one of the campaign organisers to bring out educational material for civic schools on gender sensitisation and safety of women and children, so we decided to join this campaign,” said Dr Kamaxi Bhate, member secretary, SPGRC. “BMC has a policy of zero tolerance towards harassment of women in all its offices and hospitals, and we wanted to create awareness about the importance of such a policy in the city,” she said.

Sudheendra Kulkarni, chairman, ORF Mumbai, said: “This is an initiative to make Mumbai safe and set an example for the government and the rest of the country. We want to urge the Centre to declare 2013 as ‘year to make India safe for women and children- Everywhere, 24x7.”

The groups put forward several recommendations, which include making housing societies and neighbourhoods gender-friendly, among others.
