In yet another clash between the two ruling parties in the last two days, Congress ministers cornered Nationalist Congress Party leader and  home minister RR Patil over the rising incidents of atrocities against women and dalits in the state Cabinet meeting on Wednesday.

Nitin Raut, employment guarantee scheme minister, launched the attack by narrating the incidents of dalit atrocities, where the police had failed to act swiftly. “Raut mentioned the cases in Sonai in Ahmednagar, Hingoli, Satara and Nagpur, adding that the police apathy has led to discontent in the society. He alleged that in some cases police delay the procedure to help the accused. In a case in Bhandara, the accused offered to settle the issue by paying Rs 1.5 lakh to the victim,” said a minister.

Stressing on the absence of rehabilitation scheme for rape victims, women and child welfare minister from Congress Varsha Gaikwad said that women in the state are not safe. The proposal for the rehabilitation of rape victims has been pending with the finance department for months, she added.

Rubbishing the claims, Patil said that the law and order situation in the state was under control. He also cited media reports stating that the crime rate and the cases of atrocities against women in the state have dropped, said sources

According to sources, chief minister Prithviraj Chavan intervened in the matter and suggested that Lokshahi Din be held in every district in second week of every month to deal with cases of atrocities against women.
