Congress hold women's rallies in a bid to outdo ally NCP

Nationalist Congress Party leader Supriya Sule's successful experiment of mobilising women in the state has got the Youth Congress, a junior wing of NCP's ruling partner, the Congress, in a flap.


The Youth Congress, too, has started conducting women's rallies - their target is to sweep trough the state within the next four months. The first of the series event was held last Friday in Solapur, where the party has a young legislator in Praniti Shinde, who is the daughter of union home minister Sushilkumar Shinde.

Youth Congress president Vishwajit Kadam rejected the notion that his organisation replicated a model of NCP's Yuvati Congress, which Sule heads.

"It must be noted that the 17-lakh state Youth Congress has a massive 5 lakh young women as its registered members. Women know what the Congress has contributed to their cause," he told HT. Kadam said that the events would be held till February 2013. "We will cover every Lok Sabha constituency and all revenue divisions. As of now, every block-level committee is sensitised and raring to go."

The Youth Congress is also in the process of preparing a women's charter to deal with issues related to women in the age group 18 to 35. A team of senior women Youth Congress functionaries is working on it.
