It was 13-year-old Aditya’s shoes that his father Jitendra Ranka found in the Honda City car that led to the arrest of Himanshu Ranka and Brijesh Sanghvi, who had kidnapped and murdered the boy.

Ranka did not suspect Himanshu’s role until he decided to approach the police. Himanshu drove Ranka to the police station in the same car he used to kidnap Aditya, said officials. Ranka spotted Aditya’s footwear in the car, and found Himanshu’s role suspicious.

After the complaint was registered, Ranka went to meet a senior officer and informed him of the footwear in the car.

The police, who already suspected an insider’s hand in the incident, questioned Himanshu, after which he broke down and confessed to the crime.

“The car belongs to his friend Shailesh. Once we found Aditya’s footwear and his bag, it was clear that the car was used to kidnap him,” said Krishna Prakash, additional commissioner of police (South Region).

Officials tracking the ransom calls ascertained Himanshu’s presence at the locations from where the calls were made.

Meanwhile, neighbours of the Rankas are in a state of shock. Families in the area have asked their children not to play in the street. “Our lane is full of children playing badminton till late,” said Sunita Chandran, a neighbour.

“I’ve asked my kids not to go out alone after dark,” said Praful Mehta, a resident of Girgaum.
