The Sena had supported Mukherjee’s candidature as president citing his capabilities as an administrator and a visionary.

Maharashtra governor K Sankaranarayanan, chief minister Prithviraj Chavan, along with other ministers, received Mukherjee when he arrived at the Mumbai airport on Thursday morning where he was given a Ceremonial Guard of Honour by the Armed Forces.

“We wish that you will write a new page in the history of Indian politics… and convince the government to no longer delay the decision of hanging both Afzal Guru and Kasab. We request you to reject the mercy petitions of both these people,” the letter said.

Sena leader Subhash Desai led the delegation. Desai said they appealed to the Mukherjee to take a decision that would tell the world that India will not tolerate terrorism.

The president was in the city to inaugurate the 7th Edition of the India Chem 2012 Conference at a city hotel.
