A week after a US national was attacked and robbed on a suburban local train, the Government Railway Police (GRP) arrested a 31-year-old drug addict for the crime on Sunday. The accused, Rajukumar Somnath Tiwari, was remanded in police custody till August 30 on Monday.

A joint team of GRP and crime branch officials nabbed him from CST railway station premises in the evening. "He has confessed to the crime. Once the victim is willing, we will conduct the identification parade," said Pradip Bijve, assistant commissioner of police, GRP.

Police said Tiwari, a native of Hasanpur in Uttar Pradesh, has at least seven to eight cases of theft registered against him, and has been externed twice.

Michelle Mark, 28, was attacked with a blade after she resisted the attacker who snatched her phone in the first-class women’s compartment of a Borivli-bound local between Marine Lines and Charni Road railway stations at around 4.30pm on August 18.

She sustained cuts on her cheek, neck and a few bruises on the hands. The accused jumped off the train near Charni Road station with her iPhone.

The police are yet to recover the phone. Tiwari, officials said, had sold it to his drug peddler the same day. Behru, 45, a resident of Masjid Bunder, gave Tiwari Rs300 for the phone and said she would give the remaining money later, police said.

Tiwari then went to Chor Bazaar where he bought a shirt and a trouser for Rs. 100. He intended to flee to his hometown, but could not as he did not have the money, said an official.

"We traced Behru on Monday afternoon; she has admitted to buying the phone. However, she said she had kept the phone in her kitchen and was unable to find it," said Pradip Bijve, assistant commissioner of police, GRP. She would be arrested if she does not help recover the phone, police said.
