There is some good news for suburban commuters in Dadar and Thane. Central Railway (CR) has decided to commission the first four escalators at Dadar and Thane railway stations on a trial basis by the end of February next year. The administration is working on engineering technicalities required to install these escalators.
The tenders for installing escalators are likely to be processed by the end of December and will be open to the public by the end of February.
The escalators, sanctioned in the 2012-13 railway budget, will only move in the upward direction. They will be installed on platforms 6 and 7 at Dadar station and platforms 7 and 8 at Thane station in the first phase.
“We are expediting the work of escalators at five stations in the city —Dadar, Thane, Vikhroli, Dombivli and Kalyan. Within a couple of months, the escalators at Dadar and Thane will be installed, followed by which escalator work at Dombivli, Vikhroli and Kalyan stations will also commence,” said Mukesh Nigam, divisional railway manager, CR.
In addition, the railway board has sanctioned 10 more escalators in the second phase— two each at Dadar, Thane and Kalyan and four at the Lokmanya Tilak Terminus. The Indian Railway had awarded the contract for 100 escalators at stations across the country on January 2, 2012.
As per the railway board contract, escalators will not only be installed at stations on the central line, but also at Andheri and Borivli stations on the western line. The work is likely to be completed by June 2013.
