The Bandra residence of Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray and Shivaji Park, where he was cremated, saw hectic activity on Monday.
While celebrities visited Matoshree to pay condolences to the Thackeray family, several Shiv Sena cadres turned up at Shivaji Park to pay homage to the leader.
The Sena had built a makeshift brick structure and kept an urn for people to see. A pandal was erected, which was guarded by party workers.
The ground was decorated with flowers and posters hailing the departed leader. Supporters, who missed paying their respect on Sunday, made a beeline for Shivaji Park. “I could not come near Saheb on Sunday because of the crowd. So I decided to come today,” said Ramnagina Yadav, 43, a resident of Wadala, who joined the party in 1990.
Similarly, Prakash Mandal, a small-time businessman, came to pay his last respects to the leader. “I have always admired Thackeray,” he said.
Senior party leaders such as Diwakar Raote and Eknath Shinde were overseeing the work at the place. “We have had hordes of people coming throughout the day,” said former Sena corporator Sanjay Potnis.
In contrast to last week, the road leading to Matoshree was relatively quiet. Celebrities such as Sunil Shetty, music director Salim Suleiman, along with other friends, went to meet the family and pay their respects.
Late in the evening, cricketer Sachin Tendulkar called on Sena executive president Uddhav Thackeray.
