If you want to know why honey bees are important to the environment and simultaneously indulge in a honey tasting session, head to the Maharashtra Nature Park, Mahim on Sunday morning. In an effort to spread awareness on the importance of bees for the eco-system and environment, Under
The Mango Tree (UTMT), a social enterprise, will host the country’s first annual National Bee Day on February 5.

To be organised free of charge, the day will have a host of events ranging from special movie screening on bees, a bee walk and cooking with honey.

“Most people know that bees work hard to bring us honey. But even more crucial is their role in supporting biodiversity and food production,” said Sujana Krishnamoorthy, programme leader, UTMT.

Krishnamoorthy stated that the National Bee Day is aimed at sensitisation of India’s indigenous bee –Apis cerana indica – that is also an excellent pollinator. Krishnamoorthy added,  “Honey bees are responsible for bringing to the table fruits, vegetables, oilseeds and pulses. Therefore, they have a tremendous impact on the food available to us.”
