Mohammed Ali Sheikh, a 25-year-old zari worker, had borrowed Rs. 1,200 from the workshop owner in Malwani at Malad (West) to celebrate Ramzan.

A daily wage worker, who used to earn Rs. 100 a day, he had promised to repay the loan by Diwali, said the police. Sheikh left his job at the workshop a month ago and was unable to return Rs. 600 to his former employer, Kamruddin Ansari (34).

Jaywant Hergude, senior police inspector of Malwani police station, said that on Sunday Ansari called Sheikh to his workshop and asked him about his money. Ansari was with his wife Ayesha (24) and her two brothers, Imanu Ansari (25) and Osama Ansari (20).

When Sheikh told him that he was unable to return the money but would repay the loan after getting a job, Ansari got angry. This led to a heated argument between the two, said Hergude.

The argument turned violent and Ansari started beating Sheikh. Ansari’s wife and her brothers also thrashed Sheikh.

A severely injured Sheikh was rushed to Bhagwati Hospital by his brother Shahbad Ali where he was declared dead.

He died of an internal injury, said Hergude. The Malwani police have arrested Ansari with his wife and two relatives on the charge of murder.
