A 19-hour bus journey from Bhilwara in Rajasthan to Mumbai proved disastrous for a 36-year-old city-based businessman, who was robbed off gold worth Rs. 70 lakh.

Mukesh Singhvi, who owns jewellery shops in Zaveri Bazaar and Rajasthan, found his bag containing the gold jewellery, weighing about 2.1kg, cut open and the valuables stolen.

Singhvi told the police that the incident took place while he was returning from Bhilwara, where he had gone to show samples of jewellery to a probable customer. He boarded a luxury bus to return to Mumbai at 11am on Thursday and kept the locked bag containing three boxes of gold rings, necklaces and bangles under his seat. According to Singhvi, he slept through most of the journey and got off the bus only once at Ahmedabad for dinner, said the police.

While Singhvi finally got off the bus at Naaz Hotel near Kurla at around 6am on Friday, he discovered that the jewellery was stolen only when he reached his Vidyavihar residence. He then lodged a police complaint. “Someone cut the bag while he was on the bus. We are probing the case further,” said Rajkumar Kothmire, inspector at Ghatkopar police station.
