A 23-year-old autorickshaw driver was allegedly murdered by his friend in Govandi on Sunday night, after he did not give the accused money to buy liquor. This is the fourth murder reported in the area in the last 10 days. The police said the incident happened in Baiganwadi area
of Shivaji Nagar, Govandi, when the victim Khwaja Syed (23), was going home with his mother after attending a wedding.

Syed’s friend Iqbal Sheikh (24) who was in an inebriated condition was accompanying them home, the officials said.

The witnesses in the area told the police that at around 11:30 pm, Sheikh asked for Rs. 200 from Syed. However, Syed said he did not have money. Syed’s mother too reportedly insulted Sheikh for asking for money from her son.

“This lead to a verbal feud between them which escalated into physical fight,” said Senior Police Inspector Dundapa Satyapa Jodgujari of Shivaji Nagar police station.

The officials said that Sheikh who was carrying a sharp weapon stabbed the victim in his chest and neck region. “Sheikh then assaulted Syed, injuring him grievously,” said another officer.

The officials said that Syed’s mother who started crying attracted the attention of the locals. The victim was rushed to Shatabdi hospital, where he was declared dead before admission.

Sheikh, who tried to flee, was arrested by a police patrol team.
