Make recalibration of autorickshaw and taxi meters a precondition for fare hikes in the future, the Bombay high court suggested the state on Thursday.

A division bench of justice DY Chandrachud and AA Sayed was hearing a PIL filed by Mumbai Grahak Panchayat challenging the fare hike, based on the Hakim Committee's recommendations.

The petitioner's lawyer Uday Warunjikar said over 80,000 autos and taxis were yet to be recalibrated.

"There seems to be reluctance on the part of auto and taxi drivers. Maybe, they feel they cannot tamper with e-meters," Chandrachud said.

The judges also suggested setting up of more centres to speed up the recalibration process.

The court asked the petitioners and officials from the government to meet on December 24.
