The committee of legislators appointed to probe the thrashing of police officer Sachin Suryavanshi in Vidhan Bhavan on March 19 has found that the attack was a result of mistaken identity.

Two MLAs — Ram Kadam and Kshitij Thakur — who were arrested for the assault, chief security officer Shivaji Bodkhe, the CCTV network operator, and Suryavashi were among those deposed the seven-member panel on Monday.

According to the witnesses who recorded statements, the officer was not present in the Assembly’s public gallery on the day of attack, as alleged by the legislators.

Their interrogation has reve-aled that while the issue of the cop behaving rudely with Tha-kur on Bandra-Worli sea link the day before was being hotly debated in the assembly, Thakur thought he had spotted Surya-vanshi in the visitor’s gallery on the first floor, which led to the legislators pointing towards it.

The uniformed personnel they had assumed to be the traffic cop was a police officer appo-inted to maintain decorum in the gallery.

On noticing the ensuing consternation among visitors, the guard gestured to them to keep calm, which the legislators construed to be objectionable, and rushed out to the first floor.

On their way to the gallery, they found Suryavanshi sitting outside the office of deputy chairman of the legislative council, Vasant Davkhare, who had summoned the cop to explain his behavior with the legislator, and started assaulting him.
