Two persons were killed and at least 45 injured in the violence that broke out at Azad Maidan on Saturday. While one of the deceased was identified as Mohammed Umar, 22, the other aged around 20, remained unidentified. Most of the injured are said to be policemen.

Three people who sustained bullet injuries were admitted to JJ Hospital. One of them is said to be in a critical condition.

"We are still examining patients. Seven of them have sustained head injuries and one person has suffered a chest injury. At this moment, we cannot say if the injuries are serious," said Dr TP Lahane, dean, JJ Hospital. At medical ward 5 of St George Hospital, 21 of the 22 people admitted were policemen, many of whom had sustained injuries as they were pelted with stones.

"We were stationed outside Azad Maidan for mob control. The crowd turned violent and started pelting us with stones. We did not have orders to fire," said Pankaj Sanap, an anti-riot police constable, who sustained injuries on his face.

Prashant Sawant, principal photographer, Sakaal Times, also sustained injuries on his head and face.

"We were shooting from the terrace of the press club, when the mob started throwing stones at us. When we went out, we were beaten," said Sawant. Till Saturday evening, of the 25 people admitted to GT Hospital, 23 were policemen, said Dr Lahane.

"Most of them have been wounded on their face, hands and legs. They are stable and recuperating," said Dr J Sakpal, superintendent, GT Hospital.
