Man arrested for role in 2002 Ghatkopar blast

The Mumbai police on Thursday arrested an accused involved in the Ghatkopar blast that took place in a BEST bus on December 2, 2002, killing two and injuring 49 others.

The accused, Tajul Islam Qazi, 34, a software engineer, had been living under an assumed identity for the past 10 years in Hyderabad. 

Himanshu Roy, joint commissioner of police, crime, said, “Our team arrested Qazi from Hyderabad where has was living under the assumed identity of Siddiqui Taj Qazi.” Explaining Qazi’s role in the blast, Roy said he was a conspirator and had also provided technical support for the blast.

Qazi, originally from Aurangabad, had fled with his wife and children after the blasts. He had been employed with a well-known software firm in Hyderabad as an engineer for the past five to six years, where he had been earning a salary of around Rs. 70,000 per month.

The police teams had kept a tab on the movement of his Aurangabad-based relatives, who aided his arrest.

He has been remanded in police custody till December 3 for interrogation.

A powerful bomb went off in a BEST bus at Ghatkopar in 2002. The Mumbai police had originally listed 29 accused in the case, but had managed to arrest only 19. Of these, nine were discharged by the court for lack of evidence, one died in Hyderabad and another, Khwaja Yunus, allegedly died in custody.
