A 35-year-old man, arrested in connection with the circulation of counterfeit currency, died on Sunday afternoon while in the custody of Dharavi police.

According to the police, Rafiq Shaikh,35, was declared dead by doctors at Sion hospital at around 2.30pm.

“While he was being interrogated, he fell unconscious. The police took him to Sion hospital where doctors declared him dead,” said Dhananjay Kulkarni, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Zone V. When asked whether he was assaulted, Kulkarni said “It will be premature to comment as investigations will reveal the cause of death. The crime branch will conduct a separate inquiry.”

Rafiq and his accomplice Inam Usman Shaikh,40, were arrested on Friday for possession of counterfeit notes with a face value of Rs. 1.2 lakh.
