The 64-year-old diamond merchant arrested by Goregaon police on Monday for raping his 30-year-old daughter-in-law on several occasions since 2008 has been remanded in police custody till May 21. The victim had said the accused targeted her when her husband went overseas for work.

“The victim said she was disowned by her husband for having kids with her father-in-law. The victim has claimed that she couldn’t approach the police as she was threatened by the accused,” said senior inspector, Arun Jadhav from the Goregaon police.

The victim had been staying in a joint family, but for the last six months, she has been living with her parents in Borivli. “The victim got courage after a well-wisher offered help in lodging a complaint,” said Jadhav.

A preliminary probe revealed that the victim could not conceive and was undergoing treatment for the same. The victim's father-in-law had been raping her for almost five years and the woman has two children now, police said.

The police are investigating whether the father of the victim’s two children is her father-in-law or her husband.
