Medal goes for Rs. 5 lakh at coin auction

The gold sash badge medal fetched the highest amount at the Todywalla Auction, held at Coomaraswamy Hall, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya, on Sunday.

The medal was auctioned for Rs. 5 lakh among 700 coins, medals, tokens and banknotes from the reigns of Chandragupta, Akbar, Tipu Sultan and Queen Victoria.

Sunday’s auction saw a turnout of 150 people comprising IT professionals, lawyers and businessman. The gold heavy dinar from the Gupta era was the highest valued coin at Rs. 2.7 lakh while the George VI Rs100 banknote was the highest valued at Rs. 85,000.

“More then 650 artefacts were auctioned, the remaining will be sold by online bidding,” said Malcolm Todywalla, head of the Todywalla Auction.
