The Mumbai Metro Project inched towards completion with the construction of city’s second cable stay bridge.
The six-storey-high cable-stayed bridge stood over the existing Jog Flyover on the Western Express Highway as the last pieces of scaffolding and shuttering holding the bridge in place were removed on Friday.
It is Mumbai’s second cable-stayed bridge after the Bandra Worli sea link.
The bridge is part of the Verosva Andheri Ghatkopar Metro line.
It will allow the metro to travel over the existing Jog Flyover which stands at a height of around 13 metres.
The Metro will be travelling at a height of 19.5 metres above the road which is equivalent to that of a five story building.
The highest point of the bridge, which is at 39 metres from the road surface, is equivalent to the height of a 10-storey building.
Construction of the 175 metre bridge had started in mid-2009 and was expected to be completed by April 2010.
But since the bridge had to be constructed over an existing flyover built on the Western Express Highway which was used daily by 1.2 lakh vehicles, the Mumbai Metro One Pvt Ltd (MMOPL) had to be extra careful while building the project.
The steel cables which hold and support the bridge are anchored to two massive Y-shaped pylons weighing over 1000 tonnes.
“The entire bridge has now been completed. It is a major technological achievement and will provide a major boost for the completion of the metro project,” a senior MMRDA official said.
The bridge is being made with the help of VSL a Switzerland based company that specializes in construction of cable-stayed bridges.
MMOPL is building the Rs. 2,356 crore Versova Andheri Ghatkopar Line, the first Metro line in the city, which is likely to be completed by March 2013 according to MMRDA and MMOPL officials.
