The city will soon have more water at its disposal as the city body will start storing water to the full capacity of the newly built Middle Vaitarna dam from August 28.

Eliminating a major hindrance in making full use of the dam — which became operational in May after a year-long delay with saw the cost rise by Rs900 crore — the state public works department, which was responsible for construction of a road overbridge in the dam’s catchment area, has conveyed to the civic body that the work would be completed by August 27.

The construction of the new bridge, which connects villages in Jawhar and Mokhada talukas to Kasara, had been delayed by two years.

The civic administra-tion communicated to the civic standing committee on Thursday that the public works department had written to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) stating the work on the bridge would be functional by Tuesday.

The construction of the bridge was significant because an old bridge with a lower height connecting the two regions would be submerged once water is released to the dam’s full capacity.

Due to the delay, the construction cost of the bridge had escalated by 40%, which was borne by the civic body.

“We will release water into the dam after midnight on August 27. At present, the water level in the dam has been controlled at 262 metres. We now hope to fill water up to 273m,” said Ajit Mokashi, acting chief engineer of BMC’s water supply department.

Civic officials said additional supply would depend on the amount of rainfall received in September.

“Because of the incomplete bridge, we could not impound water in June and July months that received good rainfall,” said another civic official.

However, commissioning of additional supply f rom the dam also depends on the completion of a 2- km- long tunnel to carry the water — one of the six components of the Middle Vaitarna project — which is still under construction.
