The state government reneged on its promise of tabling the judicial commission’s report on the controversial Adarsh housing society on Friday, the last day of the state legislature’s monsoon session.
Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan said the report was not tabled as the action taken report (ATR), which details action taken or proposed by the government, was not ready.
“I thought it [ATR] will be ready before the session ends. We are trying our best, and are working in accordance with the Commission of Inquiry Act,” said Chavan.
Opposition as well as government sources however said the decision was more political than administrative.
Leader of opposition Eknath Khadse questioned whether there was pressure from the Centre to keep the report under wraps. “Does the report have the name of a Union minister, whom you want to shield?” Khadse asked.
Speculation was rife that the report was not tabled as the government wants to avoid controversy over a Union minister ahead of the monsoon session of Parliament, which begins on Monday.
