The Bombay high court on Monday rejected his plea for release on the eight-year prison term that he had already served after the woman declined his offer of monetary compensation in lieu of leniency.

“The woman will have to spend the rest of her life as an invalid,” the division bench of justice Naresh Patil and justice AR Joshi observed while rejecting the leniency plea of Pranjay Purushotambhai Goradia.

The prosecution said the woman, who hails from Gujarat, had moved to Mumbai and was working with a chartered accountant at Tardeo. Although, she and the convict had had an affair in Ahmedabad, she was reluctant to carry on with the relationship, as her family was against it.

On October 26, 1990, Goradia visited her office and allegedly asked her to accompany him on an outing. When she refused, he stabbed her 15 times in the lobby. The stabbing caused a fracture in her spinal cord that paralysed her from the waist down.

Goradia, who was caught by the woman’s colleagues, was tried by the sessions court, which found him guilty of attempt to murder and sentenced him to life imprisonment.

On Goradia’s behalf, in the high court, Shirish Gupte said Goradia would pay adequate compensation to the woman and urged the court to release him.

Additional public prosecutor Dr FR Shaikh strongly opposed the plea stating no compensation could do justice to the victim.

The judges agreed and rejected Goradia’s appeal and confirmed his sentence stating the nature of injuries were enough to convince them about his intention to kill the woman.
