A 17-year-old girl, who had earlier alleged that she was raped by three men, is battling for her life at Sir JJ Hospital, Byculla, after she developed meningitis during pregnancy.

Admitted at the critical care unit (CCU) of the hospital, the girl is on ventilator support and her prognosis is ‘poor’, hospital doctors said.

The police said the girl, a resident of a slum in Mankhurd, had later told them that she was in a relationship with a 21-year-old man.

The girl had not even told her family about the alleged incident. “She never told me she was raped. It was after she started complaining of fever and pain that we brought her to the hospital,” said her mother, who works as a house help.

At JJ Hospital, doctors found that she was almost six months pregnant and informed JJ Marg police station which registered a case since she is a minor.

“I could not take her home. So doctors told me take her to Asha Sadan, a shelter, where I got her admitted. She has been living there ever since,” said her mother.

On August 8, the girl was admitted to JJ Hospital with fever and respiratory distress. “At 34 weeks of pregnancy, the unborn child died in the womb because of infection. We had to induce labour to deliver the child. During the hospitalisation, the girl was also found to be depressed,” said a doctor who is treating her.

The Antop Hill police station, which is investigating the case, had initially registered an FIR against three unidentified men as the girl in her first statement to the police had alleged that she had been assaulted by three people.

“However, when we spoke to the girl again, she told us that she was in a relationship with a 21-year-old man. On August 16, she delivered a still born and we have collected the child’s DNA samples which will be matched with the girl and the man. Further probe will depend on the DNA reports,” said Vijay Dhondwad, from Antop Hill police station.
