The water stock available in the lakes that supply water to the city has seen a huge jump thanks to the steady rainfall in the past one month.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) current water stock stands at 6,26,564 million litre, which is 50% of what is required at the end of the monsoon for the stock to last for the next eight months till the next monsoon.

This figure is more than four times higher than the water stock that was available at this time last year (1.42 lakh million litres).

The BMC needs a water stock of 12.53 lakh million litres by the end of monsoon from the six lakes for it to be able to supply 3,450 million litres of water to the city every day during the dry season.

Ramesh Bhambale, chief hydraulic engineer, said: “The comparison with last year’s quantity would not be right as monsoon set in late last year. But looking at the rainfall and the useful water content now, the situation is definitely good.”

The BMC was forced to impose a 10% water cut last year owing to the delayed monsoon. This year, such a situation is unlikely, said officials.

What has added to the total water stock by 27,695 million litres is the fact that the BMC has begun storing water in Middle Vaitarna dam, constructed last year, since two days.

Water supply from the dam is expected to be commissioned after this monsoon, increasing the supply by 455 million litres per day.

“Counting this additional supply, the lakes will need to have around 14 lakh million litres of water by the end of monsoon,” Bhambale said.
