With all five accused in custody, the Mumbai police underwent a “crime scene reconstruction” exercise at the Shakti mill compound — the spot where they allegedly gang raped a 22-year-old photojournalist — on Wednesday.

The process is meant to iron out discrepancies in the statements of the accused and help the prosecution have a watertight case.

“Some contradictions in the sequence of events given by the accused during interrogation have been ironed out,” said Himanshu Roy, joint commissioner of police, crime. “Normally, if there is no clarity on the sequence of events, a defence lawyer could try to exploit even small loopholes. We want to be sure about how the incident took place.”

According to an officer, the accused along with a police team were taken to the mill compound around 12.30 pm. The process took around two hours.

“The men showed us where the survivor and her colleague came from, how they contacted each other by phone and how they bullied them and ultimately raped the girl,” the officer added.
