Local Deonar police station, under whose jurisdiction the incident took place, was not aware of it. The people who were near the spot where the firing took place didn’t hear any gunshots that were allegedly fired.

“We had just finished our lunch when the police came in a SUV and laid a trap. The police surrounded the two from all sides and nabbed them,” said a labourer working at the civic ground, popularly known as “Atlanta garden”, in Deonar, where the incident took place. The accused Chandrakumar Singh, 36, and his brother Rishikumar, 33, were sitting in the ground when the police team surrounded them and took them into custody after a brief chase that followed the alleged firing. Another labourer who was working there said, “They were nabbed very meticulously. We didn’t hear any gunshots.”

Many children play cricket in the ground but the incident occurred during their lunch break. “We had gone for lunch but didn't hear any firing,” said a teenager. The crime branch officials, however, said that they seized a country made pistol, revolver, eight live cartridges and two empty shells from the possession of the accused.

A crime branch official stated, “We were tipped off about the location of the accused after which a trap was laid. The duo spotted us after which they fired a round each. After a brief chase, we overpowered the duo before they could fire more rounds.”

An officer added that the  accused had stopped all communication with their relatives and did not even use mobiles. “They feared that since they killed a cop, the police would try to encounter them,” an officer said. He said that the police is looking for the duo’s families who might have shifted to the city with them.
