A day after minister of state for urban development Bhaskar Jadhav held a grand celebration for his son and daughter’s wedding in Ratnagiri, the Nationalist Congress Party expressed its displeasure over the event hosted by their leader in the backdrop of the drought situation.

Embarrassed by the reports of the celebration that saw 40,000 invitees, NCP chief Sharad Pawar, who was on a three-day Marathwada tour earlier this week, told a TV channel, “Not only because of the drought, even under normal circumstances I would like to tell all my colleagues that there is a way to behave in public life. You should not cross your limits.”

At a press conference held later on Thursday, party spokesperson Nawab Malik said, “When you are a public figure, you have to abide by certain rules. We have asked all our leaders to avoid such grand displays given the drought situation in the state.”

The NCP has also asked all its public representatives, including 61 MLAs, 29 MLCs, 6 Rajya Sabha MPs, 8 Lok Sabha MPs, 366 corporators across 17 municipal corporations and 1,192 members of municipal councils, to donate their one month’s salary towards the NCP welfare trust for drought relief work.

“NCP chief Sharad Pawar has given a cheque of Rs.1.58 lakh. In the next 15 days, we expect all our public representatives to donate their salaries.

"The money will be used to help the needy students from the areas,” said Malik.

The party expects to generate a fund of Rs.1 crore.
