The Film Federation Of India on Tuesday indefinitely postponed its January 6 bandh, which would have brought production, distribution and exhibition of films to a halt.

The announcement to call off the band was made by producers Mukesh Bhatt, Ramesh Sippy, T Agarwal and others at a press conference on Tuesday.

The Federation members said that they had met the UPA government officials, who had assured them that their concerns would be given due consideration before the amendments to the Copyright Act, 1957, were passed.

Sippy also clarified that the Federation was in touch with lyricist Javed Akhtar, who according to some reports had allegedly been banned for spearheading the cause of artistes, lyricists and music composers.

“Mr Akhtar has not been banned from the industry. We have issued cursory advice to all the members of the associations to refrain from taking his services till we have sorted out matters. If they still wish to, producers can continue to work with him,” said Sippy.

The proposed amendments to the Copyright Act include giving independent rights to authors of literary and musical works in cinematograph films. Agarwal, head of the Film Federation Of India, said that an amicable solution for distributing royalties between composers, singers, lyricists and film producers would be worked out.

“There is no need for the strike. We had no choice till a while ago because all efforts to convince the government to hear us were futile. Now, I see a ray of hope to resolve differences,” said Bhatt.
