A 22-year-old man, Aditya Ruke alias Babliya, was arrested by the Kurar police on Monday for allegedly raping a seven-year-old girl in the neighbourhood.

The incident had taken place on May 1, but the police complaint was filed on Monday afternoon, and the accused was arrested the same day, the police said.

The rape allegedly took place when the girl was alone at home as her father had gone to Pune for work and her mother had gone to wash clothes at a public water tap in the vicinity. "The accused took advantage of the situation and barged into the house and raped her," said Subhash Dattatray Dafle, senior police inspector, Kurar police station.

When the victim's mother got back home, the child narrated the incident to her. When the father returned from Pune on Monday, he was told, after which he lodged a complaint. The girl's medical reports are awaited.

The police said Ruke has no previous criminal records.
