The decision to open a south-bound ramp of the Eastern Freeway on the Mumbai Port Trust (MbPT) road is set to add to the existing traffic congestion on the P D’Mello Road.
Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has constructed two descending ramps for the freeway at Orange Gate.
One ramp on D’Mello road, which was opened last month, is for dispersal of freeway traffic moving from Chembur towards south Mumbai.
Another ramp on the Port Trust road is meant for dispersal of traffic either entering the dock premises through Orange Gate or going towards Sewri after taking a right turn at P D’Mello road.
At Orange Gate, both Port Trust road and the Port Trust ramp run parallel to each other.
Traffic from the Port Trust road entering the dock area will cross traffic from the freeway taking a right-turn, thus creating congestion on Mallet road, and ultimately affecting traffic at P D’Mello road.
MbPT is constructing a new road which will divert port traffic from Wadala and help reduce congestion on the Port Trust road significantly.
This, in turn, will help ensure smooth dispersal of freeway traffic.
Authorities had decided to keep the Port Trust ramp shut till MbPT’s road was constructed.
“We wanted the Port Trust ramp to be kept closed till MbPT finishes construction of its internal road. The D’Mello road is already witnessing traffic congestion due to bad condition of the road and parking on the road. As traffic from Port Trust ramp takes the right turn, we expect there will more congestion on the stretch of D’Mello road,” said an MMRDA official.
However, following the traffic department’s suggestion, the ramp has been opened even before completion of the new road. The traffic department defended its decision, saying that traffic will be managed effectively.
“There could be congestion when traffic from the Port Trust ramp takes a rightturn at D’Mello road, but officials will be posted at the spot for smooth dispersal,” said a senior traffic official, requesting anonymity.
