Ashish Arvind Padave, 36, a computer programmer, and his family went to visit their native place Vasai on April 8.

“The family, who live on the second floor flat of Ganga Co-operative Society, Bhandup (East), left a note on the door which told postmen and courier boys to deliver letters and packages to one of their acquaintances on the first floor,” said Ashok Fapade, police inspector, Kanjurmarg police station.

“There is only one flat on each floor and hence it was easy for the robbers to flee with the valuables,” he added.

Police have appealed to citizens to avoid putting up such notes on the door as it indicates the house is empty, making it vulnerable to burglary.

The incident came to light when a building resident saw the main door open. He got suspicious and contacted the family, who reached Bhandup on Sunday morning to find they had been robbed.

Police said house break-in incidents rise during the summer as miscreants are on the lookout for vacant flats. “The thieves conduct a recee and look for buildings that are secluded and do not have proper security arrangements,” said a police officer, while explaining the modus-operandi.

A case has been registered under sections 457 (lurking house- trespass or house-breaking by night in order to commit offence punishable with imprisonment) and 380 (theft in dwelling house) of the Indian Penal Code.
