After a student in a playschool bus was molested by the bus cleaner, the Andheri regional transport office (RTO) has issued the cleaner a show-cause notice asking why his driving licence should not be revoked.

The accused was arrested and charged under sections of Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act for allegedly molesting a three-year-old travelling in the bus owned by a Malad playschool.

“During the search, we found his driving licence. Looking at the seriousness of the crime he allegedly committed, we have issued a notice of disqualifying his licence if he is proven guilty,” said AN Bhalchandra, regional transport officer, Andheri.

Further investigation by the Andheri RTO revealed the bus, operated by a contractor, is registered with the Navi Mumbai RTO. A letter asking authorities concerned to take action has been sent.

“The letter arrived on Wednesday evening. Action on the bus permit would be taken by Thursday morning,” said an official from the Navi Mumbai RTO, requesting anonymity.

Meanwhile, the Tardeo RTO announced an increase in the installation of speed governors in school buses.

In the past three months, over 450 school buses in the island city and western suburbs have been fitted with the devices that will restrict bus speed to 40km/ph.

“More school buses are getting regularised by either fitting the speed governor or renewing their fitness certificates. This will ensure safe travel for students,” said Madhukar Jadhav, regional transport officer, Tardeo. In February, 43 school buses installed speed governors in the island city, while 27 renewed their fitness certificates. While in the Andheri RTO, 408 out of 700 dedicated school buses installed the speed governor in last the three months.
