Social activist Anna Hazare believes that instead of making new laws, the government needs to first implement the existing ones stringently.

In a letter sent to chief minister Prithviraj Chavan, Hazare has slammed the state government for not implementing existing laws in its true spirit. The letter comes in the backdrop of increasing number of graft cases coming to light and Chavan and his deputy Ajit Pawar assuring that corruption would not be tolerated in the state administration.

Hazare’s letter said that despite assurances, no efforts were being made to strictly implement the existing laws like the Right to Information (RTI) Act, the Maharashtra Government Servants’ Regulation of Transfers and Prevention of Delay in Discharge of Duties Act, 2006, the Gram Panchayat Act, etc.

“Even if the above laws are implemented, corruption in the state will be controlled to a great extent. However, these laws are not followed in true spirit,” Hazare said in his letter.

The RTI Act has enabled the common man to avail any public information, administrative decisions by just paying a nominal charge of Rs10 or 20. Similarly, regulation of transfers prevents transfer at the will of his superiors or political heavy weights for a minimum period of three years.

Sharing a similar view, GR Vora, RTI activist from S North Ward Citizen Federation, said, “If these laws are implemented in letter and spirit, amendment or making of new laws not required.”
