The Shramjeev Sanghatana, an organisation working in the tribal areas of Vasai, Wada, Mokhada, Palghar, Jawahar, Dahanu, Vikramgad and Talasari, are objecting strongly to Palghar being made the headquarters of the new district after bifurcation of Thane.

Vijay Jadhav, secretary, Shramjeev Sanghatana, said, "Suryanagar and Jawahar are better areas to set up the headquarters, but because of a few rich and powerful people, the government is trying to change the centre of the district. Our organisation is totally against this."

In 1983, the death of children from malnutrition in Wawar-Wangani was discussed in the assembly and the state then set up its additional district collector's office at Jawahar, as it is convenient for tribals in these areas.

Last week, the Nahata Committee gave its report on the bifurcation of Thane district suggesting Palghar as the headquarters of the new district.
