Real estate agent robbed, abducted on pretext of deal

A real estate agent was robbed and kidnapped by a senior citizen and her accomplices, under the pretext of discussing a property deal, on Thursday afternoon.


Kamalakant Nivatkar, 38, was allegedly confined to a hotel room in Bandra after being abducted from Andheri (East) and made to sign a cheque for Rs. 2 crore. The police have arrested two of the accused while three are still absconding.

According to the Andheri police, Devyani, 60, the mastermind of the crime, and her associate Premchand Jaiswal, 38, were to meet Nivatkar to discuss a property deal on Thursday afternoon. Nivatkar, who runs  an agency at Goregaon (East), was to meet the duo near Sagar Hotel on Sahar Road in Andheri (East).

On arrival, three persons—of whom one was later identified as Kiran Sawant, 25—allegedly bundled him into a stationary SUV and sped away. They also robbed Nivatkar of his gold chain, rings and cash worth Rs1.66 lakh.

“The accused then took him to Residency Hotel in Bandra (West). The three men told him that they were cops and accused him of being involved in Rs25-crore fraud. They then demanded Rs2 crore from Nivatkar,” said an officer, Andheri police station.

On Friday, when Nivatkar was allowed to make a call to his wife, the abductors learnt that she had registered a missing persons’ complaint with the police. Sawant and his accomplices then fled from the hotel.

While Sawant and Jaiswal were arrested on Sunday morning, the three other accused are still absconding. The two arrested were produced before a holiday court and remanded to police custody till Thursday. The accused were booked for impersonating a public servant, extortion, robbery and kidnapping along with voluntarily causing hurt while committing robbery.
