Worried about the delay in the probe ordered against assistant commissioner of police Vasant Dhoble, members of Sundar Nagar Residents’ Association in Kalina have written a letter to chief minister Prithviraj Chavan.

The association members have requested the CM to direct the authorities to complete the probe at the earliest. Dhoble was transferred after a hawker died during an eviction drive carried out by him at Nehru Road in Santacruz on January 11. The family of the hawker, Madan Jaiswal, 40, had alleged that Dhoble had hit him with a lathi, which led to internal injuries.

The police had denied the allegation and claimed that Dhoble was sitting in his vehicle when the incident took place. The state CID had then ordered an inquiry into the incident.

In the letter, the association members have stated that Dhoble was transferred because of political pressure. The members have claimed that illegal hawkers have now started occupying Kalina area, a problem that had come under control during Dhoble’s tenure.

“After Dhoble’s transfer, the nuisance has begun again. We were told that the inquiry report would be ready in two weeks. Even two months later, nothing has been done,” said Clarence Pinto, secretary, Sundar Nagar Residents’ Association.
“Dhoble instilled fear among anti-social elements. His presence made residents feel safe,” he said.
