A day after a photojournalist was gangraped in Mumbai, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena chief Raj Thackeray appealed to women across the state to send bangles to home minister RR Patil 'to make him understand'.

"It's just been a couple of days since Dr Dabholkar's death and now a girl has been gangraped. Patil doesn't understand anything, nor does he have any understanding of the home department. He needs to resign."

Speaking later, MNS leader Shalini Thackeray said the party's women workers will be sending boxes of bangles to Patil's Mumbai residence.

CM Prithviraj Chavan and deputy CM Ajit Pawar, however, rejected the demand for Patil's resignation. Refusing to comment on opposition demands, Patil said, "My primary focus is to ensure justice for the girl."

Other opposition parties Shiv Sena and BJP too sought Patil's resignation. Sanjay Raut, spokesperson Shiv Sena, said, "There are several migrants in the city, no records are kept, and crime rate is rising. The home minister should take responsibility and quit."
