Soon your journey from Chembur to CST in city buses will reduce to half, since Brihanmumbai Electricity Supply and Transport (BEST) undertaking has decided to commission bus services on the Eastern Freeway.
The route number C-8 and C-50 scheduled to operate between Mantralay to Shivaji Nagar and Vashi to World Trade Centre (WTC), respectively via the Eastern Freeway is tentatively scheduled to start from July first week.
The undertaking is planning to operate total eight services of the above routes, with four services in morning and evening.
“Once introduced, the above routes would reduce traveling time between Chembur and CST to approximately 1hour from the present 2 and half hours,” said the BEST official, requesting anonymity.
Though, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has not permitted other private heavy vehicles on the road, they have given a green signal to the undertaking.
“BEST was undertaking the survey and are likely to start the services soon. So far other heavy vehicles are not allowed to ply on the eastern freeway, traffic police will decide whether they should be allowed or not,” Dilip Kawatkar, MMRDA spokesperson.
On the other hand, transport experts insisted that BEST should maintain the punctuality to make the service popular.
“The above services should be popularised and run timely so that passengers can rely on them. It could be better if for initial few days BEST offers lower fare so that more commuters opt for this service,” said Ashok Datar.
Simultaneously, the undertaking has made changes to some of the bus routes by introducing new routes, terminating or by extending few.
