Among the several high rises and shopping complexes in the Parel area of central Mumbai, a super-specialty 450-bed hospital is the latest landmark.

Set to open to the public from March 2012, Global Hospitals is among several upcoming or ongoing projects in the private health care industry in Mumbai.

“The need for health care is everywhere in the city and one cannot be choosy about land in Mumbai. There are no specialty hospitals in the vicinity and it helps that the area has been booming in the past five years,” said Dr RV Karanjekar, group director and chief executive officer, Global Hospitals.

Hinduja Hospital, Mahim, has also recently started a facility near the Khar Telephone Exchange. This centre offers super specialty services such as cardiac care and ophthalmology and high-end diagnostic work. Though much smaller than the Mahim facility, the Khar centre is a swankier option that will cater to high-end patients.

Another 350-bed hospital scheduled to open by June 2012 in Mumbai Central is Wockhardt Hospital, which sold their Mulund property to Fortis Hospitals three years ago. “Everyone wants quality care now and there is propensity to pay for good services,” said Dr VP Kamath, chief operating officer, Wockhardt Hospitals. The hospital will have a specialised institute of aesthetics, he said.

While less than 30% of the city’s population lives in south Mumbai, more than 70% of the hospitals are located in the south making the patient-hospital ratio skewed in the suburbs, doctors said. “More hospitals are needed in the suburbs of the city,” said Dr Vivek Desai, managing director, HOSMAC India, a health care services provider.  “The opportunity for hospitals to come up is huge in Mumbai with 75% of its population under-serviced,” said Varun Khanna, regional director, (west and east), Fortis Healthcare.
